![]() ![]() Unlike the previous 2 seasons, this set of three episodes seemed more of a trilogy of sorts for me as they were able to string the story of Mary Morstan-Watson and her past. Yet, when is too much obsessing about your fans good for a show that is in essence still about Sherlock Holmes. The episodes veered closely to addressing the fandom the show had generated with the middle episode as a totally comedic romp (sort of 2 murders and a wedding, sorry, bad joke.). So in this season, we see a slightly sensitive Sherlock, who cannot possibly fathom why he was someone's best friend, that he could actually care for others (in the case of protecting both John and Mary from the villain of this season Charles Augustus Magnussem - Lars Mikkelsen). In total, the 3 episodes of this season deviated from the first two seasons, more in line to statements made by co-creator Steven Moffat that Sherlock is not a show about a detective, but the life a detective. ![]() Holmes, who had been presumed to have died, was out dismantling the world-wide network of Jim Moriarty (Andrew Scott) in the past two years, under the guidance of his disdainful older brother Mycroft (show co-creator Mark Gatiss). But we digress, in the real time of the show, John Watson had moved on with his life, and had met a partner in Mary Morstan (Amanda Abbington, Freeman's real life partner). By 2014, Cumberbatch had skyrocketed to fame in various movies (Star Trek, Osage County, 12 years a slave) and Freeman had been cast in the lead role of the Hobbit Trilogy as the eponymous hobbit, Bilbo Baggins. Cumberbatch had at the start of the Sherlock run had been more well known as that creepy guy in Atonement, while Freeman had at that time been more well known for his role as Tim in the original british version of the Office over ten years ago. In the interim period (in real life) Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman (who play the crime-solving duo Sherlock and Dr. Barts in the 2nd Season Finale "Reichenbach Fall") Sherlock returned on screen for another set of 3 movie-length episodes.
